About Point-Comment
“Point-Comment” is the style of reading response I had to write weekly for Dan Klein’s Economic Philosophy class. “Not mere commonplaces!” he demanded. No “book reports” either. It was a challenge to internalize the particulars of an argument and then to add something to the argument or show why the argument was lacking.
Point-Comment is an invitation to look at sentences very closely, both at the words used, and the context of those sentences. Questions arise: Does the author really mean it exactly like that? How does this particularly-specified model of the universe interact with other facts/conceptions that I have? Can I say it better?
The hope is that I can learn something by the discipline of dissection—perhaps even become a better writer myself. We shall see.
